Sofia

Once I remembered how to walk again, we left for the address I’d been carrying for a week. I’d stared at it so much, I had to know it by heart, but regardless, I kept glancing nervously at a scrap of paper, as our taxi made its way to East King Street.

“Relax, Sofia. I am with you, you will get answers here,” Ivan told me confidently. He was so big, he took up the entire back seat, but today I didn’t mind being huddled into his side. Today’s Sofia was a different person. Today’s Sofia had shared her terrible secrets and was no longer alone. Today, I enjoyed it.

“And then?” I wondered aloud.

“And then, we will go home,” he said, full of that same sureness that was so very comforting.

“Do you think of London as home?” I asked, mostly to distract my racing mind, and also because I needed to know more about this man who had so truly captured me. A man who had somehow struck a bone-deep connection with me. The first man. The last.

“Where Max is, has been my home for many years, and now… it will be where you are, Sofia,” he said, pressing a kiss to the back of my hand. I didn’t know what to say to that, so simply stared at him.

“Do you miss Russia?” I finally asked.

“Yes, of course, every day and never,” he answered easily. I laughed at his cryptic answer.

“Ok, you have to explain that one,” I urged him. The streets we were passing in the taxi were looking increasingly rundown and I felt a pit of worry the size of a tennis ball lodge in my chest.

“I miss my family, but most are dead. I miss my city, but it has changed beyond recognition, I miss my language, but not the people who speak it,” Ivan explained.

“You miss the past,” I guessed, and he gave me that secret Ivan smile, the one that was soft, and totally unexpected from a man who looked like he could kill with a look alone.

“Exactly. I miss the Russia of my childhood, which is long since gone. I have nostalgia for a place I may never again visit, even with all the money in the world.” There was something poetic in his phrasing and the idea.

“I know what you mean. I miss the time before I knew. I miss looking at Pru and not having a secret from her.”

“You will not always have it, kisa. Once you learn everything you can, you can go to her, and tell her everything. It won’t change her feelings for you,” he said. I nodded distractedly, as a lone council estate loomed before us, rapidly coming into view.

“This is as close as I go,” the driver announced, stopping a good way off, and turning to give us an apologetic look.

“It’s fine. We’ll walk,” I told him and jumped out as Ivan paid. It was cold, an icy wind cutting through my clothes, as I stood on the pavement and stared at the estate.
